Green Gemstones: Emerald, Green Sapphire & Green Diamond

Green gemstones are a beautiful alternative to traditional white diamonds and have become increasingly popular for engagement rings and custom jewelry.

The three primary precious green gemstones are:

  • Green Sapphire

  • Green Diamond

  • Emerald

There are also several beautiful semi-precious alternatives, including Tsavorite Garnet, Green Tourmaline, Chrome Tourmaline, Green Spinel, Peridot, Green Zircon, and Green Moissanite.

Durability

If you're choosing a gemstone for an engagement ring or everyday jewelry, durability is one of the most important factors.

The Mohs Hardness Scale measures a gemstone's resistance to scratching.

  • Green Diamond: Mohs 10 (excellent for everyday wear)

  • Green Sapphire: Mohs 9 (excellent for everyday wear)

  • Emerald: Mohs 7.5-8 (beautiful but naturally more delicate due to internal inclusions)

While emeralds have been treasured for centuries, green sapphires and green diamonds are generally the better choice for clients looking for maximum durability.

Natural vs. Lab-Grown

Both natural and lab-grown gemstones are beautiful options.

Natural gemstones are formed over millions of years beneath the earth. Fine green gemstones can be quite rare, especially in larger sizes or matching sets, so availability may be limited.

Lab-grown gemstones have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as their natural counterparts. They often offer better availability, more consistent color, and significantly lower pricing, making them an excellent choice for center stones, side stones, halos, and eternity bands.

General Price Guide

Colored gemstone pricing varies tremendously depending on color, clarity, cut, treatments, origin, certification, and overall rarity. The estimates below are intended only as general starting points for accent stones, melee, and layouts (typically under 1 carat per stone).

Gemstone Natural Lab-Grown
Green Sapphire $1,500-$3,500+/ct $300-$700+/ct
Emerald $2,000-$4,000+/ct $300-$700+/ct
Green Diamond $5,000-$20,000+/ct+ $1,000-$2,500+/ct

As gemstones become larger, the price per carat typically increases significantly. Larger natural gemstones are much rarer, particularly those with exceptional color and clarity. Fine center stones can easily be several times the estimates shown above.

The pricing above is intended only as a general guideline that reflects the market value as of July 30th 2026, and should not be considered a quote. Every gemstone is unique, and pricing can vary significantly based on size, color, clarity, cut, treatments, origin, certification, market availability, and overall rarity.

Which One Is Right for You?

  • Green Sapphire offers the best combination of durability, beauty, and value.

  • Green Diamond is the most durable option and provides exceptional brilliance.

  • Emerald is prized for its rich, iconic green color and timeless character.
