Quotes & Estimates

How long are quotes valid for?

We appreciate the opportunity to create meaningful jewelry for you. Please note that all written estimates are valid for 5 business days (unless noted otherwise) due to availability, as well as fluctuations in precious metal prices. After this period, we reserve the right to modify existing estimates to accommodate for changes in labor and material prices.

Please also note that we cannot guarantee the availability of a gemstone, center stone, rare or one of a kind items unless a deposit is made to secure the piece(s) for production.

What is required to approve a quote?

To begin the process, we ask for a 50% non-refundable deposit for all custom designed jewelry. 

All loose gemstones must be paid in full within 7 business days of invoice date. Full payments made upfront by cash (or cash equivalent such as check, ACH, wire, debit) may be eligible for a discount. This does not apply to items that have already been discounted or sale items. Balance must be paid in full before pick-up. Please allow time for checks or bank wires to clear prior to pick-up.

Payment Methods

What form of payments are accepted in store?

Certified Bank checks, and debit are the preferred method of payment, however accept credit cards for any amount if presented in person with a valid state issued ID. 

What forms of payment are accepted online?

We accept credit cards for amounts under $5,000 USD. We also welcome electronic payments in the form of Zelle (Chase QuickPay) for any items under $2,000 USD.

For larger amounts over $10,000, we only accept ACH wire transfers or in person transactions.

Do you offer cash/cash equivalent discounts?

Yes. We offer an additional 1.5% processing fee discount credit to any cash or cash equivalent payments (such as Chase Zelle, Bank Wire Transfers, Certified Bank Checks, Money Orders, Cash, or Personal Checks).

Please note this is not applicable to already discounted items which are already offered at cash prices.  A 1.5-5% processing charge will be added to items that have been quoted at cash prices. The exact rate will depend on the card or financing vehicle.

Custom Designs

For custom designs, the timing varies by complexity. Generally for less complex designs, we can complete the project in as little as two weeks, but it is best to set aside 3-6 weeks as a buffer for edits or delays. Projects are on a first come, first serve basis, and your sales consultant will provide you a timeline estimate before starting your project.

At The Classic Gem, we stand behind every product that we create. Our jewelry is crafted using the finest materials with the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.

We offer a lifetime of free cleaning and professional inspections. The cleaning entails a basic clean in a commercial ultrasonic soak, a heated pressure steam spray, and maintenance check which includes prong checking for any wear and tear damage. 

We also offer a six month warranty (180 days) to cover any defects in design or manufacturing.

In the extremely rare event that there seems to be a defect with any piece, we will replace or repair the piece free of charge.

The warranty does not include coverage for wear and tear, abuse, loss of stones, and theft. The warranty does not cover repairs if the best practices for care and cleaning are not followed. If your jewelry becomes damaged through wear and tear, negligence, or accidental damage, ask us about the trade discount for repair work. The trade discount is only valid for pieces that were purchased through The Classic Gem. What does the warranty cover?

We also offer a six month warranty (180 days) to cover any defects in design or manufacturing.

Shipping

When is my item available to ship or pick-up?

Items may be picked up or shipped out as soon a balance is paid and cleared.

Please note that items paid by check, or electronic transfers will be eligible for pick-up or shipped immediately once funds are cleared. Please allow 3-7 business days before the date you wish to recive the item.

When will my orders ship?

All in-stock items are processed and shipped within 5 business days. Custom designs take two to eight weeks (vary by piece) and will be processed and shipped within 5 business days of completion.

Orders of less than $10,000 will be shipped and insured via UPS or FedEx second-day air. Items above $10,000 will be shipped and insured via UPS or FedEx next-day air. These costs will be added to the total order price. Once the order is shipped, we will provide you with a tracking number. 

Can I schedule a pick-up in person instead?

In-store pickup can also be arranged for any item purchased online.

Can you ship to a P.O. Box?

Please note that we cannot ship to PO boxes. 

How will my orders be shipped?

Orders of less than $10,000 will be shipped and insured via UPS or FedEx second-day air. Items above $10,000 will be shipped and insured via UPS or FedEx next-day air. These costs will be added to the total order price. Once the order is shipped, we will provide you with a tracking number. 

We fully insure each item for the final purchase price, from the time it is in transit until the time it arrives at its destination.

Recipient’s signature is required at the time of delivery. Please note we cannot be held accountable for delays on the shipper's part due to severe weather or other unexpected conditions. If you would like to ship your item to an address other than the one listed on your credit card, you must place the address on file with your credit card company. We will reach out to you before we confirm a shipping schedule.

TCG is not responsible for the delayed delivery of packages due to the customer not being available for signature upon arrival. If your package is sent back to us for any reason, you will be subject to paying for the re-shipment of your order. 

Do you ship Internationally?

Yes. Please note that the following terms apply to all international orders. All International orders are final. No refund or exchanges unless noted otherwise. The purchaser is responsible for any duties or taxes collected by local government agencies. Prices and shipping fees do not include import and customs duties, Value Added Taxes (“VAT”), tariffs, and other fees that may be levied by the destination country, all of which are the responsibility of the purchaser.

The Classic Gem is not responsible for brokerage fees, import and customs duties, Value Added Taxes (“VAT”), tariffs, and any other associated fees.The order recipient is the importer of record and must comply with all laws, regulations and restrictions of the destination country. The Classic Gem is not responsible for delayed delivery of packages due to customs issues when shipping internationally. All costs incurred on a refused delivery because of high custom or brokerage fees, duties, taxes or restrictions imposed by the country of destination are the responsibility of the purchaser.

Returns & Exchanges

What Items are Eligible for exchanges?

All sales are final (unless noted otherwise).

We offer exchanges on in-stock items (or items purchased out of the showcase) within 10 days of purchase. You will receive a credit for the full amount of your purchase less any shipping and insurance costs, which may be used towards an item that is of equal or greater value. The difference will be processed at checkout.

Returned items must be in its original condition along with all documents (such as certificates, boxes, packaging and all other paperwork such as sales receipts) that accompanied it when it was purchased. Any items that show signs of wear, have been altered, damaged, engraved, or resized will not be accepted for return. To confirm eligibility, please email info@theclassicgem.com within 10 days days of delivery.

What items are not eligible for returns/exchanges?

All special order, custom designed, sale, and international order items are final and not eligible for exchanges. 

Special orders include loose diamonds, jewelry and gemstones that have been specially curated through our partners for you. 

Personalized items are items that have been resized or engraved. 

Custom made are items that are bespoke, or made specifically for you.

The CAD jewelry process is a very unique process with a large investment of time, resources and complexity involved; from sourcing the best materials in the international market, to matching and calibrating gemstones, as well as the training and investment in the state of the art tools and techniques such as CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Drafting/Computer Aided Manufacturing), as well as time involved for designers and bench jewelers to collaborate on the project. 

Custom orders are non-refundable once the process has started. While we welcome small tweaks and changes, new designs outside of the scope initially agreed upon will be considered a new project, and subject to a design change fee of $250-350.00. Custom design quotes are honored for 5 business days or otherwise noted.

Due to fluctuating market prices for precious metals and gemstones as well as availability of the gemstones in itself, quotes are valid for five business days from when the quote was issued. Please also note that we cannot guarantee the availability of a gemstone, center stone, rare or one of a kind items unless a deposit is made to secure the piece(s) for production.

Programs & Upgrades

Do you offer upgrades?

This is decided on a case by case basis and is not limited to items that you have purchased through us.

The diamond that is being upgraded must be in original condition and accompanied by the original laboratory-grading document. Damaged or worn items may still be considered. 

For items or diamonds that we usually stock, we will trade it in if your purchase is 2x or greater in value. In other words, this upgrade policy, is defined as a (minimum) of two times your original diamond's current value. Generally it is the current value (minus 25-50% depending on the condition of the item).

This does not apply to used settings or jewelry, only the center stones but can vary depending on the item.

Certificates* are independent paperwork from a lab such that comes with a diamond or gemstone.

Missing certificates are subject to a fee of $275.00 to cover the cost of insuring, shipping and re-certifying the gemstone.

Temporary Mounting Program

We offer temporary mountings in a white gold or yellow gold, a classic 4 prong mounting for up to three months so that you can come back and re-design your ideal engagement ring with your partner after the proposal. We understand that picking the perfect ring, with the most perfect and unique design elements can be really hard to get right. 

Once you return the ring, we offer you a credit to use towards the custom designed ring, less $150 to cover the service cost of refurbishing/recycling the ring and stone setting labor for our bench jewelers.

Sales Tax

Is sales tax included in the price?

We are required by law to collect sales tax for all sales that occur in Illinois or are shipped within Illinois. The current Sales Tax for Chicago is 10.25% which will automatically be collected for Illinois sales. The purchaser is responsible to pay their local sales tax for items shipped out of state.

For interstate purchases, The Classic Gem will waive the Chicago sales tax, however, the purchaser/receiver is accountable for filing and paying a "Use Tax" in the state the item was shipped to. Interstate Commerce Guidelines as defined by the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) are as follows; The interstate commerce exemption applies to sales made from Illinois businesses that are delivered outside Illinois and are not returned to Illinois for use. To document the exemption, you must keep in your records one of the following:a waybill or bill of lading in the name of the seller and showing the delivery address outside Illinois if the item is shipped by common carrier, with proof of delivery and signature.a receipt from the U.S. Postal Service showing the name of the addressee, the delivery address outside Illinois, and the date the item was mailed if the item is sent by mail, or a trip sheet containing the name, address, and signature of the out-of-state purchaser and the signature of the person making the delivery if you will use your own transportation equipment. This exemption does not apply to sales to out-of-state purchasers when the purchaser takes physical possession of the item in Illinois, except in the case of items that must be titled or registered with an agency of state government for which either the seller issued a drive-away permit or the purchaser transferred current out-of-state license plates, provided the state where the item will be titled or registered offers Illinois resident purchasers a reciprocal exemption.
